This is an autobiographical story of a widow of a war veteran who take care of the songwriter and their Mother, too. This is an anti-war song, but not anti-veteran.

even though there would be war
Freedom was worth sacrificing for
But newlyweds deserve so much more

They found a second-story
one-bedroom flat
That’s where she would stay
until he got back
When they’d move away
and never be sad

She’s hoping for their will to bend

Downstairs they can hear
the pacing of her feet
As if the distance might carry her to meet
The love that would fill her veins with heat

Now the child at her feet is not her own
And the time drags on
